We only had a couple of days in Auckland before flying to Indonesia so we decided to make the most of it.
On our first day, we took the ferry to Waiheke beach. On our way, we learned that Auckland is called the “City of Sails” because there are more yachts per capita than any other city in the world.
The following day, there was a Lantern Festival celebrating Chinese New Year at Albert Park. Albert Park is a great little spot to sit back, relax and do some people watching. We grabbed some frozen yogurt the previous day and sat in the park for a few hours.
The Lantern Festival was very unique and beautiful. There were delicious food stalls, crafts, performances and hundreds of hand-crafted lanterns. This event takes place every year. If you find yourself in Auckland in the month of February, don’t miss it!
Also, make sure to check out the Sky Tower – the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere. There are great views of the city, gift shops, restaurants and for the more daring – the ability to sky jump off the Tower (no thanks!).
Now for our final destination: Indonesia.
